About the Speakers
Patty Hopkins co-founded Hopkins Architects, along with her husband Michael Hopkins, in 1976. Her home, Hopkins House, was the first project designed by Hopkins Architects and features in the exhibition. She was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland in 1996 and the American Institute of Architects in 1997. In 1994 she was awarded the RIBA Gold Medal for Architecture, along with her husband. Her most notable works include the new opera house at Glyndebourne and the Queen’s Building, Emmanuel College Cambridge.
Lily Jencks grew up in The Cosmic House (1983), a Post-Modern transformation of an early Victorian villa carried out by her parents, Charles and Maggie Jencks in collaboration with Terry Farrell, Michael Graves and others. She is Director of the Jencks Foundation, which looks after the house and archive and acts as a cultural laboratory to promote critical experimentation in historical and artistic research. She is also the founder of Lily Jencks Studio, an award winning design firm integrating architecture, landscape and art to improve the environment of our cities and surroundings.
Lily studied at Columbia University and holds a Masters in both Architecture and Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. She teaches an experimental design unit at the Architectural Association in London. Lily is the recipient of a Grace Humanitarian Award from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, an honour award from the American Institute of Landscape Architects, a Silver Medal Arthur Spruy Brooke Memorial Prize for Architecture Design. Recent awards for her architectural work include the Glasgow Institute of Architects “Supreme Award”, and the RICS “Design through innovation Award”.
Sarah Wigglesworth designed 9/10 Stock Orchard Street (2000), the multi-award-winning live/work space she shares with her partner, Jeremy Till, and her practice, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects. She is an architect with over 30 years’ experience in practice, acknowledged as a pioneering influence in British architecture with extensive expertise in green and sustainable design.
In 2003 Sarah was awarded an MBE for her services to architecture and in 2010 was made a prestigious CABE Commissioner. She was awarded Royal Designer for Industry by the RSA in 2012. Sarah is a CABE Built Environment Specialist, a member of the Kingston upon Thames Design and Ealing Design Review Panels, and was formerly a member of the Oxford City Design Review panel and the LLDC Quality Panel. She has a long standing relationship with academia and for 19 years was a Professor of Architecture at the University of Sheffield, where she led the DWELL research project designing exemplary neighbourhoods and housing for older people.
