On 25 May 2018, new changes to data regulations called the General Data Protection Regulations, or 'GDPR', will come into effect. As part of these changes, organisations such as Sir John Soane's Museum are being asked to re-seek permission from their email subscribers. You may recently have received an email from us asking you to confirm your preferences.

The following document explains why we are contacting you and what opting in – or opting out – means for our future communications.

We need to hear from you by Friday 25 May 2018, otherwise we will no longer be able to send you marketing emails.

Why did I receive this email?

We sent you an email because you indicated in the past you'd like to hear from Sir John Soane's Museum. This could have been from the sign up form on our website, a physical signup form, or when you bought something from the shop,

We're now asking you to re-confirm your decision by opting in before Friday 25 May 2018. Otherwise you will stop receiving emails. If you did not receive an email, but would like to receive communications, you can sign up using our sign up form.

What kind of emails will I receive?

If you choose to hear from Sir John Soane's Museum, you can select to hear about what's on at Sir John Soane's museum, including news, exhibitions, events, the shop, and family-specific events. Members of our Friends email list will also receive emails about Friends-specific events and news.

What happens if I don't opt in, or want to unsubscribe?

If you don't let us know whether we can or cannot contact you by 25 March 2018, we will assume you do not want to hear from us again, and unsubscribe you from our mailing list.

Friends who do not update preferences will not be able to be contacted about Friends-specific events and news. We will send 2-3 reminders as long your membership remains active, but after that will assume you do not want to hear from us again, and unsubscribe you from our mailing list.

You can change your preferences and unsubscribe at any time by clicking 'update your preferences' or 'unsubscribe' at the bottom of any marketing emails you receive, or contacting Matt Tidby, Digital Communications Manager, at 020 7440 4240. Friends can also contact Mariana Contreras, Development Manager, on 020 7440 4243.

Will my decision affect my purchase or membership?

No. If you opt out of marketing emails you will still receive transactional emails when you place an order on our website, or for essential emails regarding your Friends membership.

My question hasn't been answered here.

Please get in touch with Tom Ryley, Communications Officer, on 020 7440 4240 or tryley@soane.org.uk. Friends can also contact Mariana Contreras, Development Manager, on 020 7440 4243.
