In Focus is a series of lunchtime talks with Sir John Soane’s Museum curators and conservators in which they select an item from Soane’s vast and eclectic collection for an in-depth investigation. You will hear about the history and provenance of objects collected by Soane and have an opportunity to examine at close hand works from the collection not normally on display.

In this illustrated talk, Jane Wilkinson, Head of Conservation at Sir John Soane’s Museum, will describe the challenges, discoveries and methods of conserving 183 plaster casts as part of the current restoration of Soane’s Drawing Office. She will also present and discuss one of the casts, M1334, that is in the process of being conserved.

About the Speaker

Jane Wilkinson has worked at the Soane Museum for over thirty-five years. She was a consultant conservator until 2009 when she was appointed as the museum’s first full-time conservator and Head of Conservation. Working closely with Helen Dorey, the Deputy Director and Inspectress, she has developed all aspects of collections care for the museum as well as planning and managing major restoration projects. She is also an artist whose practice is strongly influenced by her museum work.
