The Soane Museum Study Group is an open forum for scholars – both established and emerging – to present new research into an aspect of architectural history and/or Soane’s collection.
Bridge of Communication: How Robert Adam proposed to connect the City of Edinburgh through a series of monumental bridges
This talk will explore proposals from the Adam office for three unexecuted bridges in Edinburgh, nominally: the North Bridge, South Bridge, and the Viaduct across the Lower Calton. Through collating existing research with a focus on the drawings in the Soane Collection, this talk will place these schemes within the wider context of the Adam office’s work and will consider the lasting impact that these schemes had on the urban planning of Edinburgh during a period of civic improvement.
This event takes place in the Museum's Seminar Room at Number 14, Lincoln's Inn Fields. Doors open at 6pm for drinks, with the talk at 6.30pm. On arrival, please come to the door of no. 14, which will be staffed from 6pm onwards.
